Before starting this internship with the Lynchburg Regional Business Alliance through Beacon of Hope, I thought most adults had their lives completely planned out. I assumed that once someone chose a career path, everything would slowly fall into place. After spending a week and a half listening to professionals share their experiences, I've learned that life rarely goes exactly as planned.
As I prepare to enter my junior year of high school, one of the biggest questions I hear is “What do you want to do after graduation?” The truth is I don’t fully know yet. Many students feel pressure to have their future figured out, but this internship taught me that even adults who are successful today once faced uncertainty about their future. Some changed career paths, some overcame unexpected challenges, and others discovered opportunities they never imagined.
This lesson was especially meaningful to me because growing up I had dreams that seemed impossible. Like many young people, I pictured a perfect future and believed there was only one path to success. However, hearing so many stories from professionals showed me that success is not about following a perfect plan. It is about adapting, learning from setbacks, and continuing to work towards your goals.
Another important lesson I learned was how much adults genuinely care about students and their education. Through meetings and discussions, I saw firsthand how many people are working behind the scenes to improve opportunities for students across our region. They are committed to helping young people succeed not only in high school but also in college, careers, and life. Seeing this gave me a new appreciation for the effort that goes into supporting students and creating pathways for their future success.
My internship at the Lynchburg Regional Business Alliance helped me gain a broader perspective on life, careers, and the future. I learned that it is okay to not have everything figured out right now. Plans can change, obstacles will arise, and unexpected opportunities may appear. Most importantly, I learned that anything is possible when you keep an open mind, work hard, and stay willing to grow.
