Last week, I had the privilege of attending the Tennessee Basic Economic Development Course (TBEDC) in Nashville, hosted by the University of Tennessee Center for Industrial Services. This four-day program, accredited by the International Economic Development Council (IEDC), brought together community leaders, chamber professionals, elected officials, planners, bankers, and business developers from across the state, all united by a common mission: building stronger communities through intentional economic growth.
The curriculum covered a broad and practical range of topics, from strategic planning and workforce development to business retention, entrepreneurship, marketing, and community development. But among the many valuable takeaways, one theme resonated most deeply: the power of telling your region's story.
In economic development, your story is your strategy. Site selectors, corporate decision-makers, and prospective investors are not just evaluating data points. They are evaluating whether your community feels like a place worth betting on. That means the narrative you craft about your region's assets, workforce, quality of life, and future vision matters enormously. A compelling, authentic story cuts through the noise and makes your community memorable.
TBEDC reinforced that effective storytelling is not about exaggeration. It is about clarity, confidence, and connection. It means knowing your strengths, owning your challenges honestly, and painting a credible picture of where your region is headed. Whether you represent a rural county, a mid-size city, or a regional alliance, your story is your competitive advantage.
The connections made at TBEDC, a room full of passionate professionals committed to their communities, were themselves a reminder that no one tells a region's story alone. It takes a coordinated, collaborative voice. And learning how to sharpen that voice is exactly what this course delivers.
