When Love Heals began in 2018, our mission was simple: no one should walk through hardship alone. Over time, what started as a grassroots effort grew into a nonprofit known for coordinating care, covering critical costs, and building supportive communities—particularly through our benefit concerts and Coffee for Caregivers.
As our impact expanded, so has public recognition. Looking ahead, we knew that if we wanted to build a nationally recognized and trusted organization, we needed to protect what we were creating.
That’s why, in 2025, we made the decision to trademark both Love Heals and Coffee for Caregivers.
Why We Pursued a Trademark
Trademarking is a critical tool for protecting your name, mission, and credibility. As we started planning for future growth, we saw similar phrases and programs appearing elsewhere. Trademarking gives us the legal authority to prevent confusion, protect our reputation, and maintain the clarity of our brand as we grow.
The Process and a Few Lessons
Trademarking through the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) took time, focus, and legal support. Here’s what we learned along the way:
- Start early: The longer you wait, the more likely someone else may use or claim a similar name.
- Work with a specialist: We worked with a trademark attorney through Liberty University who helped navigate filings, classifications, and potential challenges.
- Be precise: Your application must clearly define how your name is used and what services you offer.
- Stay patient: The process can take 6–12 months or more, and often includes follow-up questions or revisions.
Our greatest challenge is to continue building our capital to sustain our long-term vision for this organization. Though there was an upfront cost to this process [per trademark], securing the trademark was a strategic investment in our future.
What It Means for Us
With these trademarks in place, we can confidently scale our programs, expand partnerships, and begin building national brand recognition—without risking confusion or misrepresentation. It also positions us to one day license or replicate our initiatives in other communities.
For any nonprofit looking to grow, trademarking is more than a legal step—it’s a move that strengthens your foundation and signals your long-term commitment.
We trademarked because we believe Love Heals is more than a name. It’s a promise—and now, it’s protected.
