In many professional settings, career success and personal wellness are treated as separate entities, when in reality, they’re intertwined. We may intend to prioritize our health goals, but inadvertently push them aside for deadlines or parenting emergencies. Without realizing it, we compartmentalize our wellness for “later.” The Good News: Simple, intentional steps have a profound impact.
In his book, The One Thing, Gary Keller presents “The Focusing Question”: What’s the ONE thing I can do such that by doing it, everything else becomes easier or unnecessary?
One domino, strategically placed, sparks powerful momentum.
Sleep: The First Domino
In our workshop, Wellness in the Workplace, sleep and stress management are foundational. After 15 years as parents and entrepreneurs in the wellness industry (through doTERRA), Jason and I are passionate about this area because poor sleep creates a vicious cycle.
Inadequate sleep inhibits productivity, blocks creativity, and triggers dependence on sugar or caffeine for superficial energy. These quick fixes induce blood sugar spikes and dips, leaving us “wired and tired” the next night — thus the cycle continues.
A January 2025 survey from The National Sleep Foundation underscores the impact:
• 70% of participants said inadequate sleep diminished their productivity and mental clarity.
• 60% had difficulty handling workload or avoiding mistakes.
• 48% found it harder to manage frustration at work.
Perhaps most alarming: 40% of adults do not get the recommended 7 hours of sleep, especially those in high-stress or shift-based jobs.
Those who work from home struggled even more to get adequate, restful sleep.
Additionally, sleep-deprived employees are more prone to illness and work-related injuries.
The takeaway is clear: well-rested employees are good for business.
In our workshop, we address three common sleep challenges: falling asleep, staying asleep, and waking with energy.
To address these challenges, our initial objective is establishing a smooth transition from workday noise to evening calm.
We provide holistic tools that quiet “mind chatter” and support your body’s natural relaxation through practical shifts:
• Limiting late-afternoon caffeine
• Creating calming bedtime ambiance
• Introducing aromatherapy for deep, restful sleep
Incorporating clean, bioavailable supplements that align with your circadian rhythm
In conclusion, sleep is the key that unlocks progress across your entire wellness journey. Small adjustments to improve sleep quality will generate surprising momentum in other areas.
In our next article, we’ll explore the second domino — Digestive Health — its impact on workplace productivity, and simple steps you can incorporate.
